1. Portage Park District opens new nature preserve in Kent, Brimfield (record-courier.com) — A new 215-acre Portage Park District nature preserve has opened along the Kent–Brimfield line, giving residents trails, a children's nature play area, picnic shelters, and views of Plum Creek. Kame-Esker Bog expands the existing Cooperrider Kent Bog preserve and protects a rare peat bog ecosystem, turning a once-mined site into a major new outdoor destination for Kent families.
2. Kent State coach Josh Moore assumes dual role as director of wrestling (beaconjournal.com) — Kent State has promoted men's wrestling coach Josh Moore to a new dual role as director of wrestling and head coach, based in Kent. He'll lead the launch of Ohio's first Division I women's wrestling program in 2027, expanding opportunities for student-athletes and strengthening the university's wrestling profile.
3. Update: Holy Family school sustained electrical fire, priest confirms (bluewaterhealthyliving.com) — Holy Family Parish School on Kent Road in Stow plans to start classes on schedule after an Aug. 17 electrical fire damaged one classroom wall. No one was hurt, and fire crews from Kent and several neighboring departments quickly contained the incident, allowing the school to keep its calendar of events intact.
4. Portage County obituaries for Aug. 17-18, 2026 (theportager.com) — Kent and Portage County families are mourning several community members this week, including Matthew Jabin Secaur, a Kent-born Roosevelt and Kent State graduate with deep ties to music and technology. His remembrance service will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at First Christian Church of Kent, while brief notices mark the passings of other area residents from Ravenna, Streetsboro, and nearby communities.
