Kent City Schools asst. football coach charged with leaving scene of deadly crash (cleveland19.com) — A Kent City Schools assistant football coach has been indicted on two counts of not stopping after an accident, tied to a fatal crash on Franklin Avenue in Kent last month. The district says the coach, who is not a teacher, is on paid administrative leave while the case proceeds and emphasized its concern for the families affected.
2. Cora M. Garner (akron.com) — Longtime area resident Cora M. Garner, who once lived in Kent before settling in Stow, has died at age 91. Friends and family were invited to calling hours and a funeral service on August 31 in Stow, followed by burial at Stow Cemetery on Kent Road, with memorial gifts suggested to Mission Baptist Temple.
3. Kent State, Prevention Action Alliance receive $3M grant for substance use prevention efforts (cleveland.com) — Kent State University in Kent has secured a $3 million, five-year federal grant to expand substance use prevention efforts across 20 largely rural and Appalachian counties, including Portage. The funding will grow Kent State's Insight data dashboard and support regional planning, training, and advisory committees so local leaders can better target prevention resources and policies.
4. Panthers Release 2026 Fall Schedule (pittsburghpanthers.com) — Pitt's baseball team will visit Kent on Saturday, October 17 for a fall matchup against Kent State, bringing a bit of ACC competition to town. The rest of their four-game fall slate includes home dates with Navy, Youngstown State, and Mercyhurst, plus their internal Blue/Gold series in Pittsburgh.
