• It's a drill! Portage EMA, county staff learn at tornado, hazmat event (record-courier.com) — Portage County emergency officials recently ran a full-scale disaster drill built around a fictional F-4 tornado striking near downtown Kent and forcing residents to shelter at Kent State's MAC Center. The exercise tested how local agencies would coordinate tornado response, hazmat cleanup, power and water outages, and transportation so they can better protect Kent-area residents in a real crisis.
   

• Canton man charged with strangulation, domestic violence after Kent standoff (cleveland19.com) — Kent Police say a 26-year-old Canton man is facing strangulation and domestic violence charges after an early-morning standoff at a Carlisle Court apartment near the Kent–Stow border. A reverse alert warned nearby residents while Metro SWAT responded, and officers ultimately took the suspect into custody without serious injuries or an ongoing threat to the neighborhood.
   

• Portage County obituaries for Sept. 14-15, 2026 (theportager.com) — Portage County families are mourning several longtime residents, including Robert "Bob" Eddy and John Henry Caipen of Kent, who both passed away at home on September 11. The obituary list also remembers community members from Ravenna, Hiram, and beyond, and shares details on services so friends and neighbors can pay their respects in the coming days.
