Enrichment Programs for High School Students

High School students interested in medicine and pharmacy careers can gain hands-on experience at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Applications are currently open for two high school programs, HealthSuccess and Pathways to Pharmacy.

HealthSuccess is a selective enrichment program held each month, designed to help prepare high school students in grades nine through eleven who are interested in studying medicine or pharmacy. Participation in HealthSuccess provides students with opportunities to explore careers in medicine and pharmacy; interact with medicine and pharmacy students, physicians, pharmacists and other health care professionals. Students learn college readiness skills, teamwork, medicine and pharmacy career information, the importance of professionalism, as well as how to prepare to apply to the University.

Site visits to partner universities and hospitals will also occur throughout the program, allowing students to become familiar with the associated hospitals, pharmacies and universities that partner with the University. HealthSuccess programs are typically offered once a month, on Saturdays, September through May.

To be considered for participation in HealthSuccess, students must reside in the greater Akron, Canton, Cleveland or Youngstown areas, must currently be enrolled in eighth through tenth grade, have a grade point average of 3.5 or better, and complete an application process. Other consideration will be given to students who will be first-generation college students, as well as those from rural or urban environments that identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in health care professions.

Pathways to Pharmacy is designed to expose students from groups underrepresented in pharmacy to career of a pharmacist. The goal of the program is to expand student interest in the pharmacy profession and increase the number of students who graduate from high school and pursue pharmacy as a career through mentorship, enrichment programs and industry exposure.
