Kent Bog Boardwalk Dedicated to Gordon Vars
Friends of the Kent Bog gathered Saturday to dedicate the Kent Bog boardwalk to longtime supporter Dr. Gordon Vars.
A dedication of the boardwalk at the Tom S. Cooperrider State Nature Preserve (Kent Bog) took place Saturday morning. The boardwalk was dedicated to Dr. Gordon Vars, founder of Friends of the Kent Bog and longtime member of Kent Environmental Council. Vars died in a car accident earlier this year.
Gordon talked often about the bog, especially when a mall was planned to be built across the street on Meloy Road. The mall was never constructed.
Karl Liske read the dedication, Chris Mallin spoke about Gordon and widow Alice McVetty-Vars' association with the bog. Tom Cooperrider was one of roughly 40 who attended. The Kent Unitarian Universalist Church Choir sang an Irish folk song, "Hi Ho, the Rattlin' Bog." Gordon sang the song in the Unitarian Church Choir. Adam Wohlever, from the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, led a nature hike around the boardwalk.
