The Rainbow House at Dawn

Riot of red creates colorful corner.

I'm sure we've all noticed this house at the corner of Columbus and Depeyster Streets in Kent. How could we not?

Even if it were all white, the rambling and detailed construction would draw the eye.  But with the addition of so much and so many colors, it turns into an abode worthy of a Yellow Brick Road address. The dawn light highlights the bright yellow porch, the purple chair, and the wavy siding found only on the east side of the house.  What fun.

For those interested, the house is owned by Mike Smith and was formerly the home of N.J.A. Minich, who served as a two-term mayor of Kent in the earlier part of the 20th century. Minich also was editor of the Kent Bulletin.

Kent painter Sam Ludwig painted this house at 141 Columbus St. for Smith and two others like it in a similar color scheme.
