-Poems written by Local Elementary School Children in collaboration with The Wick Poetry Program of Kent State University

-A Reading of the Poems will follow on April 23rd in Downtown Kent during The “Who’s Your Mama?” Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival Block Party at The Home Savings Plaza

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Lynn Vogel is a Photographer and currently works for The Portage County Soil and Water Conservation District. Her Photography is featured on The Watershed Banners in the Exhibit.
Vince Packard is an artist and environmental activist who currently resides in West Virginia. He has shown work regularly at The North Water Street Gallery.
Douglas “Skip” French is an artist who resides in Hocking Hills, Ohio. He is the past recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Award and has held Woodcut Printing workshops at The North Water Street Gallery.
Jim Vandenboom holds a BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art and a MFA in Sculpture from Kent State University. He created and sponsors the annual Project: From the Tree.

"From the Tree” was created to provide a venue and spotlight for the creative efforts of Kent elementary school students, local poets, and two outstanding organizations that are teaching our children the benefits of creative thinking, Standing Rock Cultural Arts and WICK Poetry Outreach Program at Kent State University: http://dept.kent.edu/wick.
The students at Walls and Holden Elementary Schools have been asked to investigate their human relationships and interdependence with trees physically, emotionally and metaphorically through displays of Sculpture and Poetry. Each featured student has a poem displayed on the wall at The North Water Street Gallery and receives a professionally mounted print of their poem in addition to a commemorative chapbook with all 20 selected poems.
There will be a Reading of the Featured Poems at The Home Savings Plaza on April 23rd as part of The Main Street Block Party of The “Who’s Your Mama? Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival.

Northeast Ohio Agencies “Display” Their Commitment to Cleaner Water!
Since 2002, the Northeast Ohio Public Involvement, Public Education (NEO PIPE) group has been working together to create regional resources and improve water quality in their communities. Perhaps you’ve already acquired some helpful tips from their publications such as The Rain Garden Manual for Homeowners, Where Rivers Begin, or Green Lawns, Healthy Environment. Well, the New Year brings a new NEO PIPE project that will be popping up in neighborhoods near you!
The Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF) awarded $21,900 to the Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District on behalf of NEO PIPE to implement “From the Upper Reaches to Lake Erie’s Beaches: A Banner Year for Nonpoint Source Pollution Solutions.” This project is a watershed awareness and nonpoint source pollution education campaign targeting residents and homeowners in the Lake Erie Basin. Collaborators include the Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Medina, Portage, and Summit Counties, the City of Avon Lake, and the Black River Watershed Project -Lorain County Community Development Department.
Eight sets of six collapsible banner displays have been created and are being unveiled to deliver a unified, regional message empowering residents to practice healthy household and backyard habits that improve water quality and reduce storm water pollution. Banners will be accompanied by a corresponding brochure. Banner topics essentially “bring it home” for residents by providing information regarding:
∑ “The Rundown on Runoff” and “What Are Watersheds?”
∑ How “Clean Storm Water Starts at Home”
∑ Ways to “Slow Down, Spread Out, and Soak In Storm Water” in our yards
∑ Tips to “Steer Clear of Pollutants” when maintaining our vehicles and boats
∑ And “It’s Not Hard to Have Healthy Yard!”
The banners cover these five main storm water topics and will be showcased at events, workshops, and public locations in over 100 communities in Northeast Ohio. Be on the lookout and help spread the word… 2011 will be a banner year for nonpoint source pollution solutions!
This annual exhibition coincides with the Annual “Who’s Your Mama?” Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival.

The Annual “Who’s Your Mama?” Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival is produced by Standing Rock Cultural Arts. This annual event is held in Portage County and was developed to celebrate Earth Day and bring a greater awareness to the idea of sustainable, ecological activities to a large number of people in our region. A wind-powered website is found at our sister site www.whosyourmama.org. There are four main ideas presented at the event:
1. Alternative Energy
2. Sustainable Agriculture
3. Conservation
4. Multi-Media Environmental Education (Films, Music, Dance, etc.)
