In the course of our lives, we may come across a family who needs to learn more about mental illness because a child, parent, spouse, aunt or uncle is affected. They can attend a free nationally-based education course in Portage County. The Portage County Family-to-Family Education Program starts Saturday, March 16, and will run every Saturday for 12 weeks. The program is sponsored by the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County and NAMI Portage County with a grant from the Women's Guild of The Church in Aurora. The course will be held at The Church in Aurora, 146 S. Chillicothe Road, Aurora 44202, 9:30 a.m. to noon. The course is open to anyone who has a family member or a friend with a brain disease, including schizophrenia, manic depression, clinical depression, an anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. The course provides participants with education about the biology of the brain and the major mental illnesses. It is taught by local residents who have a family member dealing with mental illness. There will also be information shared about treatments, rehabilitation services, problem-solving, communication and advocacy. You can sign up until March 22. Call the Mental Health & Recovery Board at 330-673-1756, ext 201. You can also register at laurab@mental-health-recovery.org.
