The Longest Night: Every year on the Winter Solstice – the longest night of the year - Kent United Church of Christ offers A Christmas Remembrance worship service. On the evening of Friday, December 21 at the Kent United Church of Christ offers solace for the souls of those who struggle to find joy at the most difficult time of year. The jingling of bells on street corners, upbeat Christmas carols playing in every store, and bright lights that bring smiles to so many often intensifies loneliness and pain for those whose holiday season is marked by loss of a loved one, unemployment, or a struggle with a personal issue.
The service provides an opportunity for those seeking quiet reflection and meditation a way to cope with the pressure to be joyful when there is little joy in the heart. Inspirational words of comfort, poetry, interpretative dance, instrumental music and vocal solos combined with silent refection, prayer, and an opportunity to light a candle in honor of lost loved ones or in hope of a brighter new year may bring one in pain a quiet renewal of faith.
The service is at 7:00 in the Chapel, and is over by 8:00. Any who wish to stay longer to pray, reflect, or simply sit in the quiet candlelight following the service are invited to do so.
