Kent Garden Club Holds Horticultural Show (PHOTOS)

The Garden Club of Kent held its annual Horticultural Show recently, at the Ode to Joy building on Ravenna Road in Streetsboro. Chair John Gwinn reports that certified judges Rodney Toth, John Schinker, Harry King, Lynn Hoffman, Hugh Earnhardt and Dan Burns, pictured below, from the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown, were impressed with the overall quality of the show.

Many enthusiastic, experienced club members including Barb Feldmann, Jan Snowberger, Dick and Sue Abbott, Judy Woudenberg, and Rick Dorr, pitched in to help with set up, registration, running, clerking, serving refreshments, clean up, and offering advice and suggestions, especially to new exhibitors.

In conjunction with the Hort Show is the Photography Show, chaired by Chico Enin, and judged by: Chris Coville, Mike Smith and Sydnie Barnette. There were 26 entries in categories including Plants with Birds or Insects, Plants with Water, Plants with People, and Plants shot in macro or zoom, in black and white or color.

Gardens of Merit: Sue Abbott and Judy Woudenberg reviewed the community gardens at Morningstar Farm and Beckwith’s Orchard for horticultural and aesthetic excellence. They presented rosettes to: Gail Closs, Sue Metcalf, Larry Neal and Dan and Raleigh Ryan, Betsy Neylon, Felix Offodile, Geri and Lowell Orr, Jeanna Pisegna, Marty Rings, John Seifer and David Yanagloss, Barb and Bruce Vasbinder, and Alice Zimmerman.

Gardens of Distinction: President Rick presented certificates to Lee and Hal Hall for their Dahlia Garden at Beckwith Orchard.

Both the Hort Show and the Photography Show are open to the public and the Garden Club encourages both members and non-members to plan to enter something in 2013. Youth from surrounding communities are especially encouraged to submit entries. The Garden Club’s website http://gardenclubofkent.org/index.htm will carry both entry forms.

Regular dinner meetings will begin again on September 24, at 6:30 pm at the United Methodist Church in Kent, with Joseph Ripley and Ray Aeschilman demonstrating “Grow Boxes,” a form of hydroponic growing adaptable to either small or large gardens. In October the featured event is the “white elephant auction,” always a lot of fun, and the speaker for November will be Emliss Ricks. New members always welcome.
