🌱 $120M Raised To Address Lead Poisoning + April's High Unemployment
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Lakewood.
Morning, neighbors. It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Lakewood Daily — here to explain all the most important things happening in our community today.
First, today's weather:
A stray t-storm; hot, humid. High: 91 Low: 80.
Here are the top three stories today in Lakewood:
- Cleveland has raised about $120 million to address the complex problem of childhood lead poisoning, predominantly affecting Cleveland renters in poorer minority neighborhoods. The lead is primarily found in lead paint in housing and an estimated 1,000 children in the city are affected by the dangerous levels each year. Some of the raised funds will go towards grants for landlords to have their properties certified as lead-safe. (The Highland County Press)
- In April, the Greater Cleveland area saw the highest unemployment rate of any metro area with more than 1 million residents, said the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate of 5.4 percent was a drop of 0.6 since April 2021, however, it was the smallest decrease in all comparable metropolitan areas. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, in Minnesota and Wisconsin, had a 1.5 percent unemployment rate, the lowest among comparable cities. (cleveland.com)
- The Lakewood Black Caucus will hold its first Juneteenth celebration this tomorrow, Jun. 16 beginning at noon. The first part of the two-fold event will feature food, games, and guest speakers, and will take place on the front lawn of the Westerly Apartments. There will be a video presentation and discussion following the day's activities at the Barton Center Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. (cleveland.com)
