Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:
- The Cleveland Water Department is looking to spend $2 million rectifying the problem of decomposed algae at the bottom of Lake Erie reaching the taps of some of its customers. The project would involve upgrades to the intake crib in Lake Erie that feeds water into the Nottingham Water Treatment Plant that supplies water to some of the eastern suburbs and the city's East Side. Construction is expected to happen next year. (Cleveland.com)
- On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Dan Polster sentenced 51-year-old Raymond Erker, a former Westlake financial adviser who stole $9.3 million, from dozens of clients to 21 years in prison. Erker, who lives in Avon Lake, apparently stole from widows, family members, friends, police officers, machinists, and lawyers in a Ponzi scheme. Five victims spoke during the hearing and described Erker as a narcissist, soul-less, morally decrepit, con man, thief, and liar. (Cleveland.com)
- While Northeast Ohio has become more bike-friendly with new bikeways and trails, Bike Cleveland wants to see more done to ensure that local cyclists are safe on their daily commute. The non-profit recently took a tour of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood to evaluate dangerous intersections and high-speed corridors for cyclists, like the intersection of Detroit Road and West Boulevard. "Some of the things that were concerning were pedestrian crossings, speeding traffic, protected bike lanes, and feeling safe when you're riding your bike on these kinds of roads," said Jenna Thomas, Bike Cleveland's Advocacy and Policy Manager.
