A 360-Degree Approach to City Finances

Meghan F. George elaborates on her 360-approach

Strong public finances are one of my top priorities as a candidate for mayor, along with public safety. Both of these take work to maintain; both of these are even harder to restore if problems get out of hand.

This is why I will take a 360-degree approach to Lakewood’s finances, looking at balance sheets but also at our city’s whole economy, at the region, and at what lies ahead. Maintaining strong city finances is about the immediate needs in as much as it is about anticipating and planning.

My work advising CEOs is directly relevant here. I know how to read financials and determine what’s sustainable. I have direct experience questioning proposals, rejecting what doesn’t fit, and successfully negotiating for better terms than the first offer.

I have the most professional experience in this year’s race for mayor by nearly a decade, and I will put this to work for Lakewood. Good balance sheets for local government aren’t enough, if water rates or job losses are stressing our residents’ pocketbooks.

Lakewood faces serious challenges, from expensive sewer system upgrades, from a stagnating region and from state budget cuts. To keep strong public finances and good services for residents, we need a 360-degree view, just as much as any employer in a competitive market. With dozens of other cities in the region, we can’t afford to be complacent or nearsighted. I’ll work with our state legislators to bring resources home to Lakewood.

I have experience looking at that whole picture, and listening to everyone’s perspective. I have brought this experience to city council, and with your support, I will apply this experience for residents full-time as mayor.
