5 Lakewood High Students Receive Prestigious Distinction For Music

Five students were selected for the honors ensemble by the Ohio Music Educators Association's Northeast Ohio Region Orchestra.

LAKEWOOD, OH — The decorated Lakewood Schools music program received another slate of honors this week. Five students from Lakewood High School have been selected for the honors ensemble by the Ohio Music Educators Association's Northeast Ohio Region Orchestra. Sophomore cellist Grace Gill will also be part of the All-State Orchestra.

“The results of the North East Region Orchestra auditions is a testament to the strong commitment our Lakewood students show to excellence,” said Lakewood High Orchestra Director Elizabeth Hankins in a statement. “I am very proud of all of the students for taking a risk and accomplishing a major goal.”

The students must qualify for the Region Orchestra, in order to secure a spot with the All-State Orchestra. The All-State group then performs at the OMEA annual conference in Columbus. (Subscribe to the Patch Lakewood newsletter for local news and updates.)

The students selected for the ensemble are:

  • Senior Grace Cooper, bass
  • Senior Maggie McHugh, violin
  • Junior Violet Jouriles, violin
  • Junior Sean Miller, viola
  • Sophomore Grace Gill, cello

McHugh said on the district's website that, “I think it’s really cool opportunity to be able to play with the most talented kids in Northeast Ohio.”
