Lakewood social worker Emily Marvin has been chosen as the recipient of the Crossroads Hospice “Caring More” award. Social workers provide daily support to their patients, but few receive special recognition for their tireless efforts. In a move to honor social workers and their advocacy for those in need, Crossroads Hospice launched the “Caring More” award for a social worker who goes above and beyond for his/her patients and community.
At a breakfast held in her honor, Emily received $500 to present to her non-profit of choice, the Abbey Rose Foundation.
As the Director of Care Coordination with Caring Tree Senior Care, Emily Marvin has helped hundreds of seniors stay independent in their own homes. She provides counseling to seniors and their families and connects them with valuable resources in the community, such as caregiving, transportation, meal planning and housekeeping. Emily also teaches classes to fellow social workers, including courses on the benefits of humor in healthcare and how to support those who care for loved ones with dementia.

“Social workers are the unsung heroes we depend on every day. They go out of their way to connect the ill to resources, counsel their families and give them the special time and attention they need,” said Stacie Beck, Executive Director of Crossroads Hospice in Cleveland. “Emily exemplifies what it means to go the extra mile for the people she serves, their families, her colleagues and community, and we are delighted to honor her as the recipient of the Caring More award.”
In the community, Emily plays an integral role in the Abbey Rose Foundation, which was established in memory of her niece who passed away at four-months-old. She provides loving support to hundreds of grieving mothers across the country by mailing them the same book that helped her own family overcome Abbey’s tragic loss, Mommy Please Don’t Cry: There Are No Tears in Heaven by Linda Deymaz.

“By knowing that we are helping mothers in their toughest times, we hope we can bring peace,” Emily said. “Even as a little baby, Abbey touched many lives, and she continues to touch many lives.”
