Veterans honored, New flag dedicated, Old flag retired

Harding Middle School will once again hold a grand Veteran's Day celebration.  On Thursday, May 23, Veterans representing all military branches, and from the campaigns of World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan will converge upon the Harding gymnasium to honor our fallen heroes.

Speeches will be given, individual branch anthems will be played, and veterans recognized.  In addition, Harding will be hoisting a brand new 8X12 American flag to replace the tiny 4x6 flag that currently waves on our impressive 40 foot flag pole.  This new flag comes courtesy of the Harding PTSA, and through the efforts of the Student Council's book sale.

The Memorial Day celebration ends with a proper flag retirement.  The old flag will be lowered while playing Taps, respectfully dismantled, and burned in accordance with US flag code.  This retirement will be conducted by members of the boys and girl scouts, and student council members. After the flag is completely consumed, the new flag will be raised and the Pledge of Allegiance recited by the student body.  This proves to be a very moving and meaningful ceremony, one that the students, staff, and veterans will surely remember.
