Bill Sets Protocols To Stop Inmate Withdrawal Deaths In Ohio

The legislation, called Sean's Law, was introduced this week by Lakewood State Senator Nickie Antonio.

LAKEWOOD, OH — State Senator Nickie Antonio introduced "Sean's Law" this week. The bill would establish protocols for inmates at Ohio jails who are at risk of suffering withdrawal from drugs, alcohol or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Valium).

“We need to have procedures and policies in place to ensure that inmates are not at risk of experiencing fatal complications from withdrawal in our jails,” said Antonio, a Democrat from Lakewood. “Sean’s Law will serve as a reminder of a life ended too soon while providing hope to the families through updated health and safety protocols in our jails.”

The legislation is named after R&B singer Sean LeVert who died in 2008 while in custody at Cuyahoga County Jail. He was denied his prescription medication, Xanax, and died from the complications. He was 39.

At a press conference announcing the bill, Antonio was joined by LaVert's wife and children.

At least two-thirds of the jail population has a drug abuse or dependence problem, according to the National Sheriffs' Association.
