Bites Nearby: Cozumel

Lakewood loves Mexican food and this place was a hit before they even opened their doors.

Last year when we learned that Cozumel was in the works in the defunct IHOP, my kids would wonder aloud — each time we passed it — When are they going to open?

And I'll admit it, I was wondering, too.

Mexican flavors are easy to like and having a good quality restaurant close-by is such a plus... even if there are a couple other Cozumels out there - in Independence and Broadview Heights – there is nothing franchise-y about it and our Cozumel became an instant Lakewood staple.

I have lost track of how many times we have eaten at Cozumel, but we have never had to wait to be seated – not because they aren’t busy, but because they have ample seating, great service and quick turnover. In spite of this rapid-fire table turnover I have never felt rushed or been harried to move along.

The wait-staff are pleasant, helpful and efficient. The food is always prompt and tasty- and the kitchen is always happy to accommodate our request to keep one plate entirely dairy-free.

The décor is understated compared to some Mexican restaurants, and it is very clean; they have made the space very much their own and I am guessing they would like for us to forget that IHOP was ever there.

 — there is obviously so much demand for a Mexican place right in town… it is a great place to bring your family, go on a date, go with co-workers, get take-out... and it won’t break the bank.

The menu is lengthy (and not available on-line) - in broad strokes: Enchiladas, burritos chimichangas, combination and vegetarian platters all range in price from $6.95 to $8.95; Quesadilla Rellenas (stuffed quesadillas) are $6.95 to $9.25; Fajitas are $9.50 to $13.95 or Fajitas for 2 are $19.95; specialty seafood, chicken and beef options range from $6.95 to $12.95.

Mexican food is best when the freshest ingredients are used, but let’s face it; we live in Northeast Ohio — these ingredients have a long way to go to get to our plates.

I, for one, am so happy to have a good Mexican restaurant four blocks from my house- especially in the dead of winter when I need a ray of sunshine in my life.

There is metered street parking on Detroit and on Ethel Avenue, as well as a parking lot that wraps around the side and to the rear.

Cozumel does take credit cards and reservations Sunday through Thursday, but not on Fridays or Saturdays.
