Bites Nearby: Malley's Chocolates

So much more than a chocolate shop — Malley's has been scooping ice cream for more than 75 years.

Malley’s is a classic Lakewood business, established in 1935 that — in spite of the economic depression at the time — managed to flourish and proliferate.

This chocolate shop/ice cream parlor is a staple in Lakewood, because of the high-quality products and the friendly environment.

Now that we have skipped spring and jumped right into summer a simple, frosty ice cream cone is just the thing.

One can’t help but feel a bit of nostalgia going into : the old-timey ice cream parlor has seating for a dozen at a long counter, plus 15 well-spaced tables.

The interior was designed to look like a garden incorporating pastel pinks, whites and greens, hand-painted flowers climb the walls and trellises — and with the omnipresent aroma of chocolate, it’s sort of like sitting inside an Easter basket.

It is a step back in time that any kid will appreciate; glasses of water and bowls of pretzels  are brought to the table for crunching while considering all the choices…

The ice cream menu is extensive with so many fun options ($2.25 to $6.95): 20 gourmet ice creams, sherbets and sorbet; fudge, marshmallow, butterscotch, caramel toppings; ice cream soda floats, milkshakes and malts; specialty sundaes (embellished with Malley’s candies of course) or design your own; single, double or triple cones (there are even $1 cones for preschoolers)... The Ultimate sundae ($19.95) — 10 scoops of ice cream, four toppings, nuts, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry on top — proved to be too much for five teenage boys, but it was fun to see them try...

This is the go-to place after every school event, on a hot summer's day or even a freezing winter afternoon when the gray has got you down…  “Let’s go to Malley’s” will put a twinkle in any kid’s eye — but it’s just as delightful for adults, too.
