Columbine Anniversary Vigil To Be Held In Lakewood Park

Students from Lakewood High will also rally for stricter gun laws after the vigil.

LAKEWOOD, OH — Friday, April 20, will mark the 19-year anniversary of the Columbine Shooting. To remember the lives lost on that day, and to rally for political action on guns, the Lakewood Student Committee of Activism is hosting a nondenominational candelight vigil in Lakewood Park.

The event will start at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Attendees should gather by the bandstand at the park, 14532 Lake Ave.

The group from Lakewood High School said they wanted to honor the memories of the thousands of people killed by gun violence since 1999, including 13 people at Columbine High School in Colorado. They also want to spur political action on guns.

"There will be multiple speakers to help the community get educated about the issues, informed about how to help the movement, empowered to take action, and to send a message to our representatives: we are holding them accountable for their complacency, we are demanding safer streets, safer schools, and we won’t take anymore BS," the group said on Facebook.

The students said the event would be a peaceful, non-violent rally.

"Whether it is domestic violence, police intervention, school shootings, accidents, suicides, homicides—the list goes on and on... which is why, after the vigil, we will proceed with a rally about ending gun violence and complacency when it comes to gun control policy, specifically in Ohio," the group said on its Facebook page.
