Hello all. It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Daily. Here's all the local news you need to know right now.
First, today's weather:
Cloudy. High: 73 Low: 69.
Here are the top three stories today in Lakewood:
- Last Monday the Lakewood City Council unanimously approved Mayor Meghan F. George's plans to use $1.9 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money on public safety needs which include a pilot program to add ambassadors and additional uniformed police to city parks. The city will enter into a contract with the nonprofit Downtown Cleveland Alliance (DCA) to have their award-winning ambassador program staff city parks. Mayor George said that Lakewood is a safe community and that they want to be proactive in keeping it that way. (Cleveland 19)
- Experts from the Ohio Department of Agriculture announced that the spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect, was spotted recently in Cleveland. The insect was found hatching from egg masses near Cleveland West 117th Street. The spotted lanternfly is known to be destructive to trees and plants. (Cleveland 19)
- On Saturday, Cleveland officials dramatically shifted their position on the contentious topic of how to handle the dirt-bike and ATV riders that burn through the city. The city joined efforts with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and conducted its first major crackdown in years arresting 15 riders on felony charges, citing 30, and seizing approximately 15 vehicles. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb said that going forward illegal off-road vehicles riding in the city will be met with a police response. (cleveland.com)
