Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:
- After two months of discussion, the Lakewood City Council has decided to table the controversial issue of consolidating the city's police and fire dispatch services with other communities. "This wasn't something Lakewood needed to worry about until 2025 at the very earliest, and even then, it would really take some kind of a push or mandate from the county in order for there to be actual pressure put on Lakewood to merge with anyone else," said City Council President John Litten. - Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson issued a health alert on Jul. 12 informing the public that Cuyahoga County has suffered at least 15 suspected overdose deaths from Friday afternoon through Tuesday morning. The medical examiner's report stated that the County is on pace to top 700 overdose deaths in 2022. The overdose deaths are also striking Northeast Ohio suburbs like North Royalton, Richmond Heights, Lakewood, and Middleburg Heights. (News 5 Cleveland WEWS)
- The city will replace the western part of Detroit Avenue and West 117th Street intersection this week. Lakewood City Engineer Mark K. Papke said that the concrete at the intersection is being replaced due to deterioration. "Every year after winter we end up spending a lot of time patching it with asphalt," Papke added.
