🌱 COVID Money For More Officers + In-Person Memorial Day Events
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Lakewood.
Good morning, Lakewood! Like many of you, the Patch team is taking some time off to celebrate Memorial Day, so you won't see a newsletter in your inbox on Monday morning. We will be back on Tuesday with your next update, but in the meantime, here's what's happening around town this holiday weekend.
First, today's weather:
Some clouds, then sunshine. High: 67 Low: 60.
Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:
- Lakewood is among many Northeast Ohio cities looking to spend COVID stimulus money by hiring more police officers, however, these cities are not sure what will happen when the money runs out. Funds from the American Rescue Plan Act must be used by the end of 2026. "We're hoping by managing the funds we have now, showing a reduction in crime, that our citizens will, if necessary, [pay] to keep those additional officers on the street," said Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley. - Nine men were indicted in connection to a human trafficking investigation that began nearly ten months ago by multiple Ohio law enforcement authorities. "This task force waded into a cesspool of 'alleged men' who were trafficking a juvenile victim and sexually exploiting children, pure filth," said Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. The investigation was launched in August 2021 after law enforcement learned that Rusty Campbell was allegedly trafficking a child in exchange for money and drugs. (Cleveland 19)
- In-person Memorial Day festivities will return to many Northeast Ohio cities this weekend. Parades and ceremonies honoring veterans will take place across the region. The city of Parma Heights will host the oldest continuous Memorial Day service in Ohio at 9:30 a.m. at Parma-South Presbyterian Church on the front lawn. (cleveland.com)
Today in Lakewood:
- Sounds of St James Horn Trio At St. James Catholic Church (7:00 PM)
- The Legend of Georgia McBride At Beck Center for the Arts (7:30 PM)
- Reggae Fest Cleveland At Voinovich Bicentennial Park (12:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- Check out this year's "Summer Fun Guide: 20+ Great Things to Do in Cleveland," from outdoor concerts to summer brews. There are trails to discover, waterfalls to gaze upon, summer concerts to jam to and wineries to explore. (Clevelandmagazine.com)
- If you're looking for a new eatery, then you'll want to check out this article, "22 of the Hottest Restaurants In Cleveland Right Now." Photos, menu descriptions, and addresses provide all the information you'll need to make a well-informed choice. (Cleveland Scene)
- Come out to the 7th Annual "Picnic in the Park" today at The Harvard Square Center from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be free food, entertainment, and guest speakers at this fun-filled, community event. (Cleveland Arts Events)
Alrighty, you're all caught up for today. I'll catch up with you bright and early Tuesday morning with another update!
