Back when Lakewood was called Rockport Township, people here felt the impact of the Civil War most dearly through the officers and soldiers they sent to serve in the Union Army’s fiercest battles. Families struggled to maintain farms and businesses. And the same forces that brought the nation to war rocked the fledgling community.
