Lakewood Public Cinema:The Great McGinty (1940) Directed by Preston Sturges Not Rated

Churchill once said that, "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." In fact, he might have said it after watching this movie. A lowdown bum works his way up to the governor’s mansion using every dirty trick in the book. Things only start to fall apart when he tries to use his ill-gotten gains to do some good in this rotten world. Darkly funny and strangely moving, the great Sturges makes his directorial debut with a landslide winner.
