In fact, he might have said it after watching this movie. A lowdown bum works his way up to the governor’s mansion using every dirty trick in the book. Things only start to fall apart when he tries to use his ill-gotten gains to do some good in this rotten world. Darkly funny and strangely moving, the great Sturges makes his directorial debut with a landslide winner.
