Fallen Firefighters To Be Honored Sunday In Lakewood
The event will kick-off Fire Prevention Week in Lakewood. Firefighters will be visiting local schools Oct. 9-13 to discuss fire prevention.

LAKEWOOD, OH — The Lakewood Fire Department will honor all the firefighters that gave their lives this past year during a ceremony on Sunday. The event will also serve as a kick-off for National Fire Prevention Week in Lakewood.
"During a brief ceremony at Station #1, at noon on October 8, the Lakewood Fire Department will recognize the firefighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice this past year," Fire Chief Scott Gilman said in a letter to city council last month.
The ceremony will include on-duty fire personnel gathering with their fire apparatus at the Firefighter's Memorial in front of the station. Local officials will also be in attendance. (Subscribe to the Patch Lakewood newsletter for local news and updates.)

Sunday has also been proclaimed National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Day in Lakewood by Mayor Mike Summers and the city council. The event is open to the public and free to attend.
Following the ceremony, there will be an open house held at the fire station. Tours of the Fire Museum will be available to interested attendees, starting at 12:30 p.m.

Sunday's ceremony is the kick-off event for National Fire Prevention Week events in Lakewood. During the week, firefighters will visit Lakewood schools and discuss fire safety with the students. Firefighters will also demonstrate their firefighting equipment for the children.
