Festivals Celebrating Community, Music and Arts Take Over Lakewood

Celebrate the start of fall with food, concerts, entertainment and more this weekend.

1.

/ 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

Why Go: For 24 years, the Lakewood Community Festival has been celebrating  community, cultural heritage and families. The afternoon includes craft and game booths, pony rides, children’s games and other entertainment. In long-standing tradition, there will also be lots of food from stuffed cabbage, pierogies and kielbasa to pizza, French fries, and funnel cakes and more.

Where/When: / 8:30 p.m. to midnight Friday

Why Go: John Ford Coley is best known as half of the Grammy-nominated duo, England Dan and John Ford Coley. You may have heard his hits like  "I’d Really Love To See You Tonight,” “Nights Are Forever Without You,” “Love Is The Answer,” "We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again" on the radio. Ford will be joined on stage by his band, The Cryers, who will also be opening the show.

3. THE WHISKEY LOCK AT THE SCREAMING ROOSTER

Where/When: / 9 p.m. Friday

Why Go: The Whiskey Lock is a three-piece progressive group that mixes contemporary sounds with traditional bluegrass, folk, country, blues and rock. They bring their versatile sounds to their own original songs as well as covers of everything from Bob Dylan to Ray LaMontagne, Hank Williams and Neil Young, and more contemporary artists like The White Stripes, The Shins, The Black Keys and others.

4. GREAT LAKES ARTS FEST 2011

Where/When: , The Hi Fi and The Symposium / 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday

Why Go: The inaugural GLarts Fest, hosted by the Great Lakes Arts Initiative will be going on at three Lakewood locations on Saturday. There will be something for everyone with each spot hosting its own style of music. 5 O'Clock Lounge will have acoustic, folk, blues and classic rock. The Hi Fi will have alternative, rock and pop artists, and The Symposium will mix a little electronica, funk, soul and rap. Artists will also be a big part of the party, bringing photos, paintings, jewelry and more. There will also be a chalk walk between venues where you can create your own artwork.

5. GOT GREEN?

Where/When: / 6 to 10 p.m. Friday

Why Go: This benefit for the features culinary creation from Chef Jonathon Sawyer of Greenhouse Tavern, a performance by Kristine Jackson and KJ Blues, and a tour of the community garden. And it's all for a great cause!
