Free Ice Cream, Chance To Meet Local Cops In Lakewood

The "Coffee with a Cop" event is getting a summer-time twist, with attendees now getting ice cream cones instead of a cup o' joe.

LAKEWOOD, OH — The "Coffee with a Cop" series is getting a tasty twist over the summer. Residents who want to meet the men and women who patrol their city will now have the chance to do so over ice cream cones, instead of a cup o' joe.

The "Cone with a Cop" series is nearly the twin of its coffee-based sibling. Attendees can meet their ward officers and chat about anything. There's no pre-set agenda or approved questions. If you want to talk basketball, talk basketball. Want to talk about the use of lethal force in law enforcement? You can do that too.

The main difference between the two events is that "Cone with a Cop" will be held in the early evening hours, due to the slate of summer events being held around Lakewood. Plus, the dusky waning moments of a day aren't always ideal for coffee.

The first "Cone with a Cop" will take place at Gorilla, 12102 Madison Ave., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on June 29. As a special treat, the shop is offering free ice cream cones to everyone in attendance.

"The idea is to help to strengthen the relationship between residents and the city’s police officers, and also help a business out in the process,” said Angela Ortiz, the Ward 2 neighborhood police officer and one of the organizers of the monthly event, in a statement.
