LAKEWOOD, OH — Lakewood Schools began remote instruction this week. Students and teachers will be connecting online as the state tries to muffle the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19.

Ohio schools were ordered closed for three week by Gov. Mike DeWine on March 12. This week, the governor extended that closure through May 1.

"We have just begun our remote instruction this week so we will continue to ramp that up. With the longer closure timeline, we are working with staff to determine what the needs will be for our younger grades, including potentially providing technology devices for the younger grades to broaden the learning opportunities at those levels," a Lakewood Schools spokesperson told Patch.

In a letter to families sent out last week, school officials said teachers should have already reached out to students and families about how instruction would proceed during this closure. Families who have not received such communication should contact their building's principal. A Lakewood Schools staff director can be found on the district's website.

Additionally, the district will be providing report cads for elementary and high school students on Friday, April 3. There will be no paper report cards, but grades will uploaded to the Progressbook area.

The district's Nutrition Services department continues to provide breakfast and lunch pickup each weekday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Garfield, Harding and Lakewood High. As of last week, the district had distributed nearly 2,000 meals since schools were closed.
