🌱 Kutz Indicted By Grand Jury + Thousands Waiting For Tax Refunds

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Lakewood.

Hello there, Lakewood. I'm here in your inbox today to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on around town.

First, today's weather:

A heavy t-storm in the p.m.. High: 90 Low: 69.

Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:

  1. The Cuyahoga County Grand Jury indicted 36-year-old Franklin Kutz of Westlake for driving drunk and causing a fatal crash in Lakewood. Kutz was indicted on aggravated vehicular homicide and OVI. Lakewood police said Kutz was driving eastbound on Clifton Boulevard in the early morning hours of Apr. 23 when he struck 55-year-old Josephine Sever's vehicle. (Cleveland 19 News)
  2. The Beck Center for the Arts will proudly display the artistic work of its visual arts faculty and staff at its annual exhibition, currently open through Aug. 21 in the Jean Bulicek Galleria. The free exhibit, which is open to the public, is very impactful to current and future students, said Beck Center Assistant Director of Education Jessica McGrath. "We do it so we can showcase the talent of our teachers and provide some inspiration to all of the people who walk into our doors, including the students who may end up taking classes with some of these teachers," said McGrath. 3. More than 5,000 people may still be waiting for their income tax refund checks from the city of Cleveland, two-and-a-half months after Tax Day. As of last week, Cleveland's Central Collection Agency had processed 1,800 refunds from individuals, leaving unresolved about three-quarters of the approximately 7,150 refund requests received for 2022. That includes 370 (or about $734,000) related to remote work. (cleveland.com)

Are you a Lakewood resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
