Roberson won the top honor after judges chose her poetic works over the 185,000-plus poems submitted by 7-12 grade students from across the nation.
Entries were judged on originality, technical skill and emergence of personal vision or voice.

The national winners were selected from the 1,500 students who advanced from their regional competitions in January, said Gordillo.
“I was very surprised. I didn’t think I would win because so many people enter,” said Roberson in a prepared statement.
