Lakewood High Students Walkout For Stricter Gun Laws [Video]

Students joined a national movement on Wednesday by walking out of class and holding a protest event.

LAKEWOOD, OH — Lakewood High School students braved the biting cold and occasional flurries of snow to hold a walkout protest in honor of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Students worked with district officials to conduct the event.

While media was not allowed at the actual walkout proceedings, student leaders and Lakewood High School Principal Keith Ahearn spent time after the event discussing why the walkout took place and what students hoped to achieve.

The walkout on Wednesday was part of a coordinated national movement that saw districts throughout the U.S. engage in protests for stricter gun laws. Schools throughout Northeast Ohio held walkouts and other events in solidarity with Marjory Stoneman Douglas students.

Mayor Mike Summers was also at the walkout, Tweeting out pictures of the event. He said he was "honored" to be invited.

This was the second walkout by Lakewood High School students. The first walkout happened Feb. 21, but was not sanctioned or approved by school officials. That walkout saw students gather outside the high school with signs urging legislators to stop accepting "blood money" and to start enacting commonsense gun laws.

There are also additional national walkouts planned for March 24 and April 20. It's unclear if Lakewood will participate in those walkouts, but it seems likely.
