Lakewood Planning Director To Lead Webinar On Walkability

Bryce Sylvester will discuss how Lakewood become Ohio's most walkable city and how to make walking to school appealing to students.

LAKEWOOD, OH - The city's Planning and Business Development Director, Bryce Sylvester, will be leading a conversation on creating a collaborative neighborhood model during a webinar for Penn State University. The 75-minute discussion will focus on creating partnerships between a city and the school district.

The event, titled “Planning with School Districts: A Neighborhood Model Approach”, will be held April 12 from noon to 1:15 p.m. The webinar is part of Penn State's Land Use series.

It seems the webinar will focus on Lakewood's walkability. Penn State notes that Lakewood has always steered away from school buses, instead making sure students can bike or walk to school. It's that collaborative planning that will feature heavily in the webinar.

“Lakewood has been deemed the most walkable city in the State of Ohio, and is working to implement bike infrastructure across the city to create even safer streets for students, and all of Lakewood, to use,” Sylvester said on the Penn State website.

Sylvester will discuss school drop-off locations and where to locate small, residential schools.

“Small schools located within residential areas -- like in Lakewood -- will be more walkable, but may have more limited drop off areas as well. Secondly, districts can make efforts to help ensure the surrounding streets and sidewalks are safe and inviting for small cyclists and pedestrians," Sylvester said.
