Candidate Statement:
The Lakewood Board of Education oversees the education of over 5,000 students and is responsible for a budget of over $70 million per year. The people of Lakewood have been well served by past Boards. Overall, they have done a fine job of managing both the financial and educational challenges faced by the district. I am running for School Board Member because I believe my financial and managerial experience gives me the background necessary to help the Board meet future challenges which will be much more difficult to manage.
The district will be required to provide a quality education even as the State cuts local school funding, labor costs continue to rise and housing prices continue to fall. Lakewood City Schools face a crisis point. Since the district will be forced to balance its budget (no deficits allowed!) we will be faced with either substantial tax increases or substantial cuts in pay and benefits for School Board employees.
The core issue is: How best to provide an adequate education for the students, offer fairness and equity to teachers and other school board employees and protect the interests of the people of Lakewood?
