Candidate Statement:
A strong education system has the greatestpositive impact on a community and society as a whole. Providing the best possible educationopportunities to our children, and those that will someday call Lakewood their home, is fundamental to the quality of our community.
In 2002, I participated in a leadership role on the Fifty Year Committee, which was formed to set a strategic vision for the Lakewood public schools for the next 50 years. My participation provided me with particular insight to the design and academic requirements of Lakewood’s public schools. My service to the community also includes a full six year term on the Board of Zoning Appeals – serving as chair for the last year, and this year I will conclude a full six year term on the Planning Commission – serving as chair for the past two years. I have been a Cub Scout leader for my two sons Ben and Tim, and have been actively involved with their academic life. I have learned to work with resources available for children of special needs. My other volunteer activities include The Cleveland Restoration Society – past Board President, The League of Historic American Theatres – past Board President, and I currently serve on the boards of Cleveland Public Art and the Downtown Cleveland Improvement Corporation, which is in Downtown’s Business Improvement District.
My work as a real estate professional, expertise in preservation and renovation, holding leadership roles as a community volunteer, and being a committed parent has provided me with the skills necessary to be a highly effective School Board member. I fully understand the importance of listening effectively and weighing decisions based on the long view and the edict of the community.
In 2004 and 2007 for the bond issues and again in 2009 for the levy, our community overwhelmingly validated the vision of the Fifty Year Committee, and I would like to see that vision carried forward to the benefit of future generations. The value of our community, both intrinsic and economic, depends on it. I have lived in Lakewood my entire life and am very proud to call it my home. If elected I will work diligently to do the best for our children and the community.
