Lakewood School Earns Rare Distinction From State

Only nine schools in the state earned the High Progress School of Honor title. Only one school in Cuyahoga County earned the distinction.

LAKEWOOD, OH — Only nine schools in Ohio were named a High Progress School of Honor by the Ohio Department of Education, for gains in reading and math proficiency. Roosevelt Elementary in Lakewood is one of the schools that grabbed the prestigious distinction. It is the only school in Cuyahoga County to earn the title High Progress School of Honor.

“We're so honored to receive this recognition,” Roosevelt Principal Eileen Griffiths said in a statement. “It's the collaboration amongst teachers, staff and families that make Roosevelt a place where students can make great gains and reach their potential!”

To earn the title High Progress School of Honor, a building must be Title 1 or Title 1-eligible with at least 40 percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Schools must also rank in the top 10 percent for gains in proficiency.

Additionally, schools must have an Annual Measurable Objectives grade of C or higher, and met or exceeded Ohio's Progress measures for the last three years.

“By consistently ensuring this high performance for all students, you have proven that administrators, teachers and families who have high expectations and continually support their students can enable every child of every background and ability level to achieve academically. Together, you are opening up a world of opportunities for your students and building a wonderful legacy for your community,” Paolo DeMaria, superintendent of public instruction for Ohio, said in a letter to Griffiths.
