Lakewood Students Win 40 Awards At Art Show

LAKEWOOD, OH — Lakewood students won more than 40 awards in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional competition in 2019. Lakewood High and West Shore Career-Tech Media Art & Design students claimed seven Gold Keys, the highest honor given.

"Congratulations to all the winners and their teachers Dayna Hansen, Anne McQuay, Arline Olear, Autumn Sabin and Amy Sedlak," the Lakewood City Schools said in a statement.

Senior Natalie Costello and junior Nola Williams-Riseng both received two Gold Keys each. Senior Patrick McCallum and Media Art & Design students Darnasia Shields and Willow Rosser also claimed Gold Keys. All Gold Key recipients will move on to the national competitions.

Williams-Riseng was also nominated for the Special American Visions Award in photography, for her piece "Erimari."

Nine students won Silver Keys, including three by senior Jane Kalinowki, two by juniors Timothy Frolo and Cameron Krizman. Eighteen students received Honorable Mention designations.

The annual regional competition is hosted by the Cleveland Institute of Art. Student artists submit work in a variety of mediums and then compete for cash prizes, medals and scholarships. A panel of local, professional artists, art educations, writers and writing educations form the jury for the contest.

This year's winners will be honored at a ceremony on Jan. 18 at the Cleveland Institute of Art. The winning work will be on display at the institute's art gallery through Feb.1.
