Here are some landscaping ideas for spring. Most people plant flowers every spring or make a project to improve their landscaping. Its good to get ideas early and start planning before its time to start landscaping your yard. Therefore I want to share a few ideas with you.
Everyone has a foundation planting in front of their house. This is where most people focus their attention. Maybe it is time to tear out your old shrubs and plant new ones. You wouldn’t be alone. The average American landscape only lasts 7 years! Stop trying to landscape around over grown evergreens. Low maintenance plants are trending for in front of the house. Look for plants that do not require being sheared. Go to broadleaf evergreens for shade, and dwarf conifers for sun. Plant 60% evergreens. Fill the rest with flowering shrubs and perennials. Try more perennials and less mulch. Group them in masses and plant in odd numbers.
Try a different mulch. Double and triple shredded hardwood mulch has became very popular. Studies have shown that these mulches do not provide much benefit to plants. Dare to be different. Spread sweet peet, leaf humus, compost, or plain old wood chips. If you use wood or bark, the thicker the better. Yup, that’s the opposite of what is popular, but its the best for soil and plants. Doesn’t it seem like regular double shredded mulch turns to dirt by the end of the year? Maybe its a marketing scheme to get you to mulch your beds every year. Finely shredded mulch looks great but mulching your entire landscape can be expensive.
