Natural foods grocer Lucky's Market opening Spring 2018

Choice is coming to grocery store shoppers on Cleveland's west side. After many delays on the overall 'Shoppes on Clifton' project, Lucky's Market, a Boulder, Colorado-based natural foods grocer will be opening in Spring of 2018 at 11604 Clifton Blvd., right at the Cleveland and Lakewood W 117th border.

While focused on natural and organic foods, Lucky's Market pricing is more in line with a standard grocery store. In a press release, co-founder Bo Sharon stated that “Lucky’s Market takes the price out of natural foods and has something for everyone.”

Across the 22,000 sq ft store, shoppers will find a large bulk foods section, a local-focused produce section, an in-house bakery, a sizable wine and beer section, and a made fresh daily hot foods section. The store also features a café with an outdoor seating area. True to its Boulder roots, Lucky's Market has $2 drafts and $3 glasses of wine that shoppers may drink while they shop.

The Edgewater location will be Lucky Market's second in Ohio, joining a store in Columbus. One only has to look at the Columbus location's weekly ad to get excited. This week's sales include 77 cent avocados, 48 cent grapefruits, 98 cent/lb grapes and honeycrisp apples, $3.99/lb grass-fed ground beef, and more.

In addition, Lucky's Market will feature a large apothecary department where people can, quote Lucky's Market, "buy what they need to make their own teas, salves, tinctures, healing elixirs and more."

The 'Shoppes on Clifton' takes the site of octagonal 'Fifth Church', which stayed vacant for more than 20 years prior to its recent demolition, and a Giant Eagle neighborhood store demolished many years ago. When leaving the property and building their new store on W 117th close to I-90, Giant Eagle placed a deed on the property prohibiting a grocery store from being developed on that property other than their own. Giant Eagle was lined up to be an original tenant of the 'Shoppes on Clifton' with a smaller footprint neighborhood store. Perhaps strategically, Giant Eagle pulled out last minute in 2014 throwing the whole project in jeopardy. A new grocery tenant could not take Giant Eagle's spot due to the deed. Councilman Matt Zone worked hard for his community to court Lucky's Market and remove the cumbersome deed.
