After two years of research and development, the Lakewood City Schools will introduce new Standards-Referenced Report Cards for our elementary students. These new report cards will describe what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade level in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music and physical education, as well as provide specific feedback on students’ work habits.
The Teaching & Learning Department will be holding information sessions on the new Standards-Based Report Cards for elementary students for parents who wish to learn more. The meetings are:
- Wednesday, October 9th, 9:15-10:15 am, Grant Cafetorium
- Wednesday, October 9th, 6:30 - 7:30 pm, LHS Cafetorium
- Tuesday, October 15th, 6:30-7:30 pm, LHS LRC Conference Room (for families with students with disabilities)
Standards-Referenced Report Cards are beneficial for students, families and teachers in many ways. Students and families will have a much more thorough picture of what a student is able to do, and what are the student’s areas of need. Students will have the opportunity to practice new skills without the penalty of receiving a poor grade. Teachers will be able to use ongoing assessments as a way to guide classroom instruction, and the process of re-teaching will create opportunities for growth.
