New Lakewood Superintendent Starts Work Wednesday

Michael Barnes wrote a letter to the Lakewood community to mark the start of his tenure.

LAKEWOOD, OH — The school district's new superintendent, Michael Barnes, starts work on Wednesday. He penned a letter to the Lakewood community to mark the start of his tenure.

"I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that I am honored to serve as your Superintendent of Schools. The Lakewood City School District is one of the finest district’s in the nation. During my transition to Lakewood, I have learned of its focus on educational excellence, its warm and welcoming spirit, and its unwavering commitment to the children of this community," Barnes said.

He went on to elucidate his views on the importance of education — noting that he sees strong education as a necessity for the success of an "educated individual, community, state, nation."

Barnes went on to thank departing Superintendent Jeff Patterson, who served the district for 12 years. Patterson announced his retirement in November 2017, giving the district ample time to find his replacement.

The Lakewood Board of Education announced that it had selected Barnes as Patterson's replacement in late March 2018.

Barnes began his career as a social studies teacher at Mayfield High School. He is also an adjunct instructor for both Ursuline College and Cleveland State University. He moved into administrative roles in 1998 when he became the assistant principal of Euclid High School. He held that job for two years before taking the same job at Charles F. Brush High School. He held that position for a year.

He soon returned to the Mayfield Schools as the director of athletics. He then became Mayfield assistant superintendent, before jumping to Lakewood City Schools.
