🌱 New Smart Apartments Open + Funeral Home Raises Violence Awareness

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Lakewood.

Hi all. I'm back in your inbox this warm summer morning with your fresh edition of the Lakewood Daily. Let's get this Wednesday started off right, with a quick review of the most important things happening around town...

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny; breezy, warmer. High: 91 Low: 77.

Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:

  1. The Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities and North Coast Community Homes are offering short-term leases at TryTech at the Cranford Apartments, a new high-tech housing option in Lakewood for people with developmental disabilities. The smart apartments offer people with DD the rare opportunity to try high-tech tools for everyday living like mealtime, entertainment, security, and self-care. Typically, renters live in the apartments for three weeks, during which time support staff assess their needs and help determine steps to reach a more independent lifestyle. 2. Local funeral home E.F. Boyd & Son is attempting to raise awareness about inner-city violence with its most recent billboard. The billboard, located between Woodland Avenue and the Opportunity Corridor, reads STOP THE VIOLENCE or face the mourning after. The funeral home is the oldest Black-owned funeral home in Greater Cleveland and has been working with local families since it opened its doors in 1905. Ms. Marcella M. Boyd Cox, vice president and chief of community engagement, stated that as the decades have gone on, violence has gone up, and it's time someone addressed the issue of inner-city youth violence. 3. A waterspout was spotted on the Lake Erie shoreline yesterday morning by News 5 viewer Kaylin Szydlowski who took photographs. The NWS issued a Special Marine Warning on Tuesday morning until 9:00 a.m. due to strong winds greater than 34 knots and an observed waterspout. Szydlowski captured photos of the waterspout from the One Cleveland Center building, about 15 minutes from Lakewood, just after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. (News 5 Cleveland)

Today in Lakewood:

  • New Parent & Lactation Support At Cove Community Center (10:00 AM)
  • Open Mic Night w/ Bethany Joy At Forest City Brewery (7:00 PM)
  • Tai Chi Easy At Blessed Trinity Parish (7:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Scroll through the latest houses to hit the Lakewood area real estate market. View pictures, read through the specs, and then click on the listing to learn more. (Lakewood Patch)
  • Be aware of the road repaving project in Northeast Ohio's already busy intersection of Ridge Road and Brookpark Road. Construction on Ridge Road in the cities of Cleveland, Parma, and Brooklyn started this month, forcing lane closures and traffic delays. (News 5 Cleveland)
  • Come on out for the 45th Annual Lakewood Arts Festival this Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Detroit Avenue between Arthur and Belle. The festival will feature over 100 artists from across the country including painting, prints and works on paper, photography, ceramics, art glass, sculpture, fiber, wood, jewelry, and more. Alrighty, you're all caught up for today. I'll be in your inbox tomorrow morning with another update!
