🌱 No Residential Fireworks In Lakewood For The 4th? + Free Gun Locks
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Lakewood.
Hello all. It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Lakewood Daily — here to explain everything you need to know about what's happening in town these days. Here goes.
First, today's weather:
Hot with plenty of sun. High: 90 Low: 76.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Lakewood who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Lakewood Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:
- Most Cleveland suburbs, including Lakewood, are refusing to follow a new Ohio state law allowing people to shoot off fireworks on the Fourth of July. Last fall, state lawmakers passed House Bill 172, allowing individuals to discharge, ignite or explode fireworks on private property on specific days of the year, including Independence Day. The law allows cities to opt out of it and continue to ban the use of fireworks. (cleveland.com)
- For National Gun Violence Awareness Month, the Lakewood Police Department is handing out free, basic gun locks to residents. The city purchased 200 safety locks at roughly $4 each, which will be paid for out of the city's general fund. To receive your free gun lock, visit the front counter of the police station. - In a special episode of the "Dear Ohio" podcast, guest host Mike Kallmeyer spoke with public members of the community to discuss what efforts are being done across Ohio on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community. Podcast guests included state Sen. Nickie Antonio, D-Lakewood, the first openly gay state representative in Ohio; Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey, the first openly gay sheriff in Hamilton County; and Key Beck, interim senior manager of clinical prevention programs at Equitas Health.
