🌱 Prosecutors Refuse To Prosecute Abortion Laws + Luchita's Closes
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Lakewood.
Hello again, everybody! It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Lakewood Daily. Let's get this Wednesday started off right, with a quick guide to everything you need to know about what's happening these days in town.
First, today's weather:
Humid with clearing. High: 78 Low: 69.
Here are the top three stories today in Lakewood:
- Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley, Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack, and Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein signed a letter vowing not to prosecute women seeking abortions or anyone "promoting" abortion, which was outlawed by the 2019 bill that recently took effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. State Attorney General Dave Yost may be limited in his ability to require prosecutors to seek abortion-related cases due to prosecutorial discretion. Associate Dean for the University of Akron School of Law Michael Gentithes said that prosecutorial discretion gives local prosecutors the authority to set priorities in cases to investigate. - Northeast Ohio restaurant owner Dan Deagan suffered serious burn injuries while trapped in a Westlake house fire in the early hours of the Fourth of July holiday. The owner of Humble Wine Bar, Deagan's Kitchen & Bar, Lakewood Truck Park, and Dive Bar in Cleveland was rescued by Westlake firefighters. The firefighters were dispatched at 12:37 a.m. on Monday in response to reports of a fire on the back porch of a house on Stone Court. (WKYC.com)
- After 40 years in business Luchita's Mexican restaurant has closed. The restaurant, which was opened in 1982 by 62-year-old Maria de la Luz Galindo, has been struggling since the pandemic. "We've been very fortunate to last as long as we have," said owner Eduardo Galindo, Maria's grandson. (Cleveland Scene)
