Solar Co-Op Formed In Cuyahoga County

The group will hold meetings in Cleveland Heights and Rocky River this week.

ROCKY RIVER, OH — Solar energy is the fastest growing source of new-energy in the world, according to the International Energy Agency. Now, Cuyahoga County is trying to encourage the growth of solar energy within its borders.

A new solar cooperative, led by Cuyahoga County residents, and co-sponsored by the county and Solar United Neighbors, a non-profit, has formed and will be holding public meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday in Cleveland Heights and Rocky River, respectively.

“We’re forming this co-op to help residents reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make saving money with solar energy as simple as possible,” said Mike Foley, director of the Department of Sustainability for Cuyahoga County. “Working with the group helps members learn about the technology so they feel confident in their decision to go solar.”

Tuesday's meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of the Saviour, 2537 Lee Rd., Cleveland Heights. Wednesday's meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Rocky River Memorial Hall, 21016 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River.

“I am excited to be partnering with Cuyahoga County to help expand solar in Ohio,” said Luke Sulfridge, Ohio Program Director. “If you’ve ever thought about going solar before, this is a great opportunity to do so with the assistance of a non-profit.”

Individuals that join the co-op are not bound to purchase solar panels. However, once the co-op is large enough, and there are enough interested parties, Solar United Neighbors, a non-profit group, will solicit bids from local solar installers.

A single company will then be selected to complete all panel installations. Panels can then be purchased individually at a group rate. That could mean big savings for members.

Round I of solar panel installations has been completed through the co-op and Cuyahoga County said the total savings for members amounted to $98,445.
