Sophie Elizabeth "Betty" Rush, 96, died this past Tuesday, Jan. 24. Rush, a long time employee of Miller's Dining Room, was best known in the city for founding Lakewood Clothing &amp; Resale and the popular , according to She is survived by her sons Donald, Dennis and Kenneth and her many loving grandchildren. The funeral mass will take place at on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call in the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Lakewood on Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. Rush will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Spring is in the air, and <a href="https://www.gardenwalklakewood.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">GardenWalk Lakewood (GWL)</a> is kicking off the season with our Annual Spring Plant Swap. Join us on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Cove Park (1294 Cove Ave.) for this free, rain‑or‑shine gathering designed to bring gardeners together and help your home or garden bloom.From 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., participants are invited to drop off labeled plant seedlings, bulbs, herbs, divisions, or rooted cuttings, along with seeds and gently used garden items. Donations should be in pots, boxes, or bags, and GWL volunteers will be on hand to help label items with helpful details such as sun or shade preference, mature size, and whether the plant is an annual, biennial, or perennial.



From 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., the swap opens for browsing and picking. There’s no limit to how many plants or garden items you can donate or take, and even if you arrive empty‑handed, you’re encouraged to come explore. All are welcome to chat with fellow plant lovers, gather fresh ideas, and maybe discover the perfect new addition to your garden under the shelter of Cove Park’s pavilion.

While you’re marking your calendar, be sure to save another important date: GWL’s Fifth Annual GardenWalk on Saturday, July 18, 2026. This free, self‑guided garden tour invites Lakewood residents and visitors to explore a wide variety of creative and inspiring gardens across Lakewood.

Based on feedback from last year’s GardenWalk, the GWL board is trying something new in 2026. This year’s tour will focus exclusively on gardens located in the south end of Lakewood (south of Detroit Avenue), allowing visitors to slow down and enjoy fewer gardens more fully while creating a rotation that gives gardeners a chance to participate as guests every other year.

More details about July’s GardenWalk—including participating gardens, routes, and maps—will be shared in the weeks ahead. For now, kick off the season with the Spring Plant Swap, and get ready for a summer filled with gardens, inspiration, and community.
