Here are the top three stories today in Lakewood:
- A fundraiser for the Sojourner Truth Project will take place this Saturday, Jul. 9 at Lakewood Park. The project is raising money to install a statue of the famed 19th-century activist at the site of her historic "Ain't I a Woman?" speech. The committee is halfway to meeting its goal of $1.5 million. (Lakewood Observer)
- The Lakewood City Council is seeking applicants for the Ward 4 council seat to replace Councilmember Daniel J. O'Malley. O'Malley will resign his seat to accept a Board of Directors of the Port of Cleveland appointment. The accepted candidate for the Ward 4 seat will serve the remainder of O'Malley's term expiring on Dec. 31, 2023. (Lakewood Observer)
- Lakewood Council Vice President Sarah Kepple and Council Member-At-Large Tristan Rader sponsored the approved resolution asking state officials to protect abortion rights in Ohio. "In the wake of the United States Supreme Court overturning 50 years of precedent and the Ohio attorney general rushing moments later to implement a nonsensical six-week abortion ban, over 50 percent of Lakewood's residents now have fewer constitutionally protected rights and drastically less decision-making control over their own bodies than they did a day before," said Kepple. Rader said the community response to the resolution was overwhelmingly positive. (cleveland.com)
