St. Ed's Football Upset In Regional Semifinals

The Mentor Cardinals stunned the Lakewood-based powerhouse, preventing a St. Ed's-St. Ignatius rematch.

LAKEWOOD, OH — The St. Edward Eagles fell in the regional semifinals to the Mentor Cardinals on Friday. The upset saw Mentor win, 21-13 in a strong defensive performance. St. Ed's loss prevents a rematch with St. Ignatius in the regional finals.

St. Ed's had a sterling 2017 season. The team was undefeated until the last week of the regular season, when it was beaten by St. Ignatius. While the team likely wanted a rematch with the Wildcats on Friday, the Eagles will have to wait until 2018 to get revenge.

Mentor is a strong team that also went 9-1 in the regular season. Like St. Ed's, the only team to beat the Cardinals so far this year was St. Ignatius. The Wildcats beat the Cardinals on Sept. 1, the second week of the regular season.

Now Mentor will look to get its own revenge on Friday. Revenge that could have been St. Ed's.

In a show of good sportsmanship and classiness, St. Ed's Tweeted out a thank you to both Byers Field and Mentor. That message is below.
