Students Grab Tons Of Academic Awards For Lakewood

The district boasts one National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, 3 NMS Commended Scholars and 85 AP Scholars. Check out who won the awards.

LAKEWOOD, OH — Lakewood High School is celebrating a bevy of academic awards and distinctions that were given to students this week. Senior Veronica Lee was named a National Merit Semifinalist, while three students earned National Merit Commended Student status, and 85 students earned the AP Scholar designation.

Lee competed with 1.6 million students nationwide to become a National Merit Semifinalist. She was entered into the contest when she took the PSAT her junior year. She is now part of the 1 percent of Ohio students that have earned Semifinalist status.

Seniors Bailey Manke, Claire Walkosak and Eva Wynn earned Commended Student status in the same competition, meaning they were in the top 5 percent of PSAT performers. (Subscribe to the Patch Lakewood newsletter for local news and updates.)

The Lakewood School District also announced its AP Scholar Award recipients from the classes of 2017, 2018 and 2019. These students earned exceptional scores on their Advanced Placement Exams in the spring.

Four distinctions were awarded to students. First, students could be named National AP Scholars by earning an average of at least 4 on all the AP Exams they took, or scores of 4 or higher on eight of the exams.

The National AP Scholars were:

  • Class of 2017: Ian Bell, Rachel Daso, Zachary Dudzik and William Horschke

Students could also be named AP Scholars with Distinction by averaging at least 3.5 on all their AP Exams, or grades of 3 or higher on five or more exams. The AP Scholars with Distinction were:

  • Class of 2017: Ian Bell, Henry Bish, Rachel Daso, Ryan Detwiler, Zachary Dudzik, William Horschke, Lauren Klann, Donald McCrae, Kelley Reis, Caleigh Sheehan, Evan Suttell, Micah Swartz, Rhianna Zuby
  • Class of 2018: Kevin Cush, Abe Dalisky, Brian Donahoe, Damien Jouriles, Veronica Lee

Third, students could be named AP Scholars with Honor by averaging at least a 3.25 on all their AP Exams, or grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams.

  • Class of 2017: Veronica Kress, Yanhao Lin, Lauren Lowell, Julia Neff, Ethan Nieves-Stames, Ava Olic, Abigail Stone, Maya Sutcliff
  • Class of 2018: Emma Allenson, Jacob Brown, Emily Erhardt, Maximillian Evans, Brennan Foran, Zachary Howe, Isaac Karel, Abby LaForm, Colman McGuan, Sophia Parker, Akosh Raffai, Cody Satayathum, Isabella Smith, Claire Walkosak, Eva Wynn
  • Class of 2019: Andrew Sheldon

Finally, students could be named AP Scholars, an award earned by completed three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. Lakewood High's AP Scholars are:
