Train Hits Person In Lakewood, Victim Identified

A person was found dead near the Norfolk Southern train tracks on early Monday morning, police said.

LAKEWOOD, OH — A train hit and killed a pedestrian on train tracks in Lakewood on early Monday morning, police said. The identity of the deceased person was released later on Monday morning.

Gabriel Lopez, 29, from Cleveland, was found near the train tracks, Lakewood Police announced. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet ruled on the manner or cause of death.

However, police said Norfolk Southern Railroad Police saw a man laying on the train tracks as a train approached. The man did not move and was then hit by an eastbound train at about 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning. Lakewood officers went to the scene and located a person's body on the tracks, near Cranford Avenue.

Police said the investigation into the person's death is ongoing.

Streets near the railways were shut down to investigate, but have since re-opened.

Investigators blocked the railway crossing from the western city limits through Cook Avenue in the morning. Drivers were detoured along W. Clifton Boulevard, away from the scene. All streets were re-opened at about 7 a.m., police said.
